Speak Up On Fluoridation #8

You’re Not The First To Reject Fluoride

I was wondering how many people in the world are provided with fluoridated water, so I did a little research.  You know what I found?

Less than 5% of the world’s people drink intentionally fluoridated water.  That’s not much. (Only 5%)

For example, Europeans largely reject water fluoridation.  In Europe ONLY 10% of England, 10% of Spain, and 70% of Ireland’s people are provided with intentionally fluoridated water.  That’s it.

The following European countries have outrightly rejected water fluoridation:

  • Scottland
  • Switzerland
  • Germany
  • France
  • Belgium
  • Luxembourg
  • Sweden
  • Denmark
  • Norway
  • Netherlands
  • Finland
  • Northern Ireland
  • Austria
  • Czech Republic

 Closer To Home

Here in Washington, a number of communities have rejected water fluoridation. Four cities have rejected it by popular vote.  Those cities are Bellingham, Bremerton, East Wenatchee, and Spokane.

In Skagit County, the County Commission rejected water fluoridation by a majority vote – for all of Skagit County.

It was rejected by a vote of the city councils in six cities, including Goldendale, Kennewick, Milton, the south half of town of Snohomish, Sumner, and White Salmon.

The city of Sequim did something unique.  They put together a community survey on water fluoridation and based on the responses of the people to that survey, the city rejected water fluoridation.

And why do places reject water fluoridation?

There are a few prevalent reasons that cities and countries decide not to opt for water fluoridation.
•    The first reason is the problematic nature of compulsory medication.

•    Some cities and countries have determined that there are different, and better, ways of protecting the dental health of children.
•    Other locales cite that there are ethical and medical considerations involved in water fluoridation, considerations that they opt not to violate.
•    It has been decided that it is not a government’s job to deliver medicinal treatments to people, rather that is the sole responsibility of health services.
•    Water fluoridation has even been rejected by high courts, stating that there is no legal basis for fluoridation.

As we REconsider water fluoridation in our local town, we shouldn’t feel alone.  We certainly aren’t the first.  Many towns in Washington have already gone through the reconsideration process and have ultimately rejected water fluoridation.

I encourage Everett to look at the new research on the effects of the silicofluoride that’s used in water fluoridation and to stop fluoridating Everett’s water.

Even if fluoride was helpful to teeth, trying to distribute any drug in drinking water is the most expensive and wasteful way to do it.

People drink only 1/2% (one-half percent) of the water they use. The remaining 99 ½ % of the toxic fluoride chemical is dumped directly into our environment through the sewer system. I am a Civil Engineer, so I am very familiar with community water systems.

For example, for every $1000 of fluoride chemical added to water, $995 would be directly wasted down the drain in toilets, showers, dishwashers, etc., $5 would be consumed in water by the people, and less than $0.50 (fifty cents) would be consumed by children, the target group for this misguided practice. Your local water department can confirm all of this.

That would be comparable to buying one gallon of milk, using six-and-one-half drops of it, and pouring the rest of the gallon in the sink.
Can you think of a more wasteful government program? Giving away fluoride tablets free to anyone who wants them would be far cheaper and certainly more ethical, because then we would have the freedom to choose.
